YOGA

My introduction to yoga came courtesy of one of my housemates when I was living in Perth during 1994. Ron used to stretch every morning. I had a desk job at the time and was finding my hamstrings were getting very tight and painful. I asked Ron to show me some stretches and began doing them every day. Ron saw how dedicated I was and suggested I join him at his weekly yoga class. I loved the classes and started attending each week too.

When I moved to Canberra in 1995, I continued my yoga studies and soon developed a thirst for more information than my classes could provide. One of my teachers suggested I start Yoga Teacher Training to build on my knowledge. That was in 2001. Since then, I've completed two yoga qualifications: a Diploma of Yoga Teaching (IYTA) and a Certificate of Tantric Yoga Teaching (Heart of Shiva Tantra Yoga, Victoria). These days I teach yoga classes at various locations around Canberra.

I like to include humour when I teach; I believe it can be a mistake to be too serious. I understand the importance of instructing proper alignment and flow, but enjoyment is also important; creating and sustaining a light atmosphere in the classes keeps everyone relaxed and carefree. Some yogic activities can seem hard, but if we all stay happy during the process the difficult bits are over in no time!

ABOUT YOGA

Yoga is an ancient system of physical and mental exercises. By stimulating the various glands and organs in the body, yoga gives you access to your ‘personal medicine cabinet’. In turn, these exercises release natural feel-good neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) and hormones into the bloodstream. They also strengthen and relax the mind and body and makes you more resilient to life’s ups and downs. In this way, yoga helps with addictions because it helps you to cope without resorting to synthetic drugs. Over the long-term, yoga can also help you to find your true direction in life, and give you access to deep energy reserves, which can inspire and motivate you along your chosen path.

I also like to weave Tantric practices into my classes, such as partner asana, pranayama and massage. These activities quickly break the ice and get students interacting and cooperating. The two disciplines of Tantra and yoga can dovetail beautifully.

During our interactions, I’ll encourage you to develop a better relationship with yourself: body, mind and spirit. My background in holistic therapies underpins my belief that we are an intricate mix of physical substances, thoughts, memories and feelings, all held together by our spiritual self: the essence of who we are. We're all on this journey called 'life' and my intention is to be a strong positive influence — a patient and encouraging support to you through our knowingness of each other.

Please let me know if you’re ever in need of my bodywork/natural therapy services as these can be of great help to those experiencing physical challenges in yoga classes.
